To start xbmc via ssh, you need to also start an X Server with xinit.
I found the easiest way to do this was via the init system (I am using
systemd, but the xbmc wiki has examples for other init systems as well):

The command to just start xbmc remotely seems to be
xinit /usr/bin/xbmc --standalone -- -nocursor :0

The web interface really isn't very nice :/

If your TV supports it, you can use HDMI-CEC to control xbmc with your
TV's remote (You might need to enable this in your TV's settings):

This app also supports streaming your library to the device it is
running on.
