    I wonder if the last time I had to set things up I ran into troubles
    when trying to boot with a server using user-mode nfs-server rather
    than kernel-mode nfs-server ...

    reading back my notes from then, I think I insisted on
    kernel-nfs-server being used (and indeed my net-boots work with it)

    give it a try ?
