If you are installing unsupported packages ... then you need to
provide more info
Did you install all of the meta packages?
As a last resort, simply uninstall both pidgin and gaim and reinstall
only Pidgin
(that is from synaptic or aptitude). The best thing, is to do a
version upgrade and then you may have better problems.
