Another thought...
Since startx does appear to work, that does indicate that X isn't
broken.  However, since you aren't getting a graphical login, and you
expect one, then perhaps
- something has broken in the graphical login (config or program itself)
- the graphical login works okay, but isn't being started automatically

However, since there are multiple graphical login programs (xdm, gdm,
kdm to name the most popular) I can't give you more detailed advice.
