Exactly. same with me. I stopped (by a lack of time, unfortunately courses 
started in October) at about page 100 somewhere in the RegEx 
Machines-chapter but chapter one and two gave me for the first time the 
impression I understood something. Before that I knew little about RegExes 
and whenever something didn't work (which was usually the case) I started 
googling. But reading the results I always felt like: yes I know, still 
don't understand why this expression matches too much (or too few) And 
even if I got it working (with trial and error) I never had the impression 
I understood why it worked. The first two chapters alone made me feel safe 
for the first time and I strongly believe that anyone who works with 
textfiles in any form gets the time s/he spends with this book back a 
hundred times (BTW: same with sed & awk by Dale Dougherty) And it's fully 
beginner-friendly and often fun to read. Googling helps a lot and Mailing 
Lists even more but IMO a (good) book gives an insight that you just can't 
get anywhere else.
