[Techtalk] tar files

Hello everyone.  I am new to this.  But right now I am downloading Thunderbird for Linux.  The name of the file is thunderbird-0.5-i686-pc-linux-gtk2-gnu.tar.bz2  I haven't messed with a tar.bz2 file before.  I don't even know what the bz2 is either. The others were all rpm  if I have the right name for it.   Is rpm right?  I would like to install this tar.bz2  on my computer.  How do I go about doing this?  I am running mandrake 9.1 under KDE.
