I think the "dark blue color highlighting every other message" can be changed 
in KControl, under Appearance & Themes | Colors | Widget Color | Alternate 
Background in Lists.  (At least, that's where I've changed it for 
kmail . . . ).

As for the fonts, I think you should be able to change those in KControl, too, 
under Appearance & Themes | Fonts | Adjust All Fonts.  I think there might be 
a bug in some versions of KDE where you have to logout or restart 
applications for that to take affect.

I'm not sure if these will work on Evolution, but they should.
