At all? Which browsers have you tried and what was the failure message?

I have had immense amounts of difficulties sometimes with Internet
Explorer, which maintains its own dodgy DNS cache which can sometimes
get so confused it doesn't connect to anything. Have you tried with
another web browser?

Also:

 - which packages did you uninstall?

 and

 - do you have an alternative machine you can test from? Can it access
   the internet?

If an alternative test machine can access the internet, the problem is
more likely to be the laptop than the gateway.
