I don't use PHP4 myself, so I won't post when it's fixed, sorry.
But since I have seen people asking about this fairly recently, it still
seems broken.

As noted above, I haven't tried either, but I know people who upgraded
to the unstable version and didn't have any problems. I would definitely
check bugs.debian.org though. If there aren't any showstopper bugs, it's
probably OK.
[Proviso: Test it on a non-production machine first if you can.]
