It was just the auto_view set in mutt

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^the line is properly quoted, but between each letter is
the character ^H (note it's a backspace character not an individual ^ +
H). When I have the lines in .mailcap for lynx it spits out proper text
when I reply. That string should read > F.Y.I.
