[Techtalk] Linux andCliéSJ30 Success

A couple of months ago I wrote about how I got my Palm m130 working with
Redhat 7.3, Evolution and all that. Well, that device quickly became my
lifeline and when it signaled its inability to hold a battery charge
yesterday (by promptly and repeatedly dying when removed from the
cradle) and the store said they wouldn't be getting any more in for a
week...[insert scene of utter panic]...

I took a Clié PEG-SJ30 as a replacement. Sweet! Had to wait until this
morning to try to sync, as it had to charge overnight.

I was having problems getting hotsync to work. I did a
	# tail -f /var/log/messages
to see what the kernel was saying, deleted my old device and cradle
settings in the control panel, kept getting a stall-out at
Jan 9 10:43:55 SLOBBIT /etc/hotplug/usb.agent: Setup visor for USB
product 54c/66/100

Scratched my head for a little, double-checked permissions on the device
(ttyUSB0 & 1) and the symlink (/dev/pilot), scratched some more, *then*
looked more closely at the messages:
Jan 9 10:44:29 SLOBBIT kernel: visor.c: Sony Clié 4.x: port 1, is for
Generic use and is bound to ttyUSB0
Jan 9 10:44:29 SLOBBIT kernel: visor.c: Sony Clié 4.x: port 2, is for
HotSync use and is bound to ttyUSB1

Ah ha! So with the Clié the ports are reversed! The Hot Sync cradle
(just a cable, really) was on ttyUSB1 (with the Palm it was on
ttyUSB0). So I deleted my old /dev/pilot symlink to ttyUSB0 and did a
new one linked to /dev/ttyUSB1. Ah, synchronization!

I love this new little device already, it has such a great display,
twice the memory of the m130, and a memory stick slot.

regards,
.Beth
