You can do that. You can also use a null modem cable to set up a PPP
connection between the two boxes.

That said, if you have not invested already in a null modem cable it
may be wiser to use that money to purchase two NICs and either
purchase (A) a hub with two regular cables or (B) no hub but a
crossover cable to connect the two machines. IP over ethernet is
easier to deal with (IMO) than PPP over a serial connection and having
a hub and two regular ("straight through") cables [(A) above] will be
better investment.
