Gnome also has a session manager, gnome-session-properties, see if something 
weird got in there. Take a cruise through your ~.kde and ~.gnome folders and 
see if anything untoward is lurking in there.

This whole thing sounds really strange! Does running 'top' show any stuck 
processes?
