okay.... getting a bit further here....

thanks so much once again Tabatha for your helpful links - they're great,=

had come across them before but had a closer link and found some really=20
helpful stuff.... had another go....

and managed to get the internal modem working, which was a source of both=
er=20
for a while! bit strange, i go off to get sound working and get the modem=
=20
going instead. i think im very close though, as part of the problem with=20
sound i think is maybe a 'phantom' device conflict with the modem (earlie=
r=20
RedHat was known for this, and mandrake i've found is notorious for it).=20

so, i have interrupts set up properly for the modem, and am now happily=20
writing this to you at 56kb/s instead of my crappy little 28k pcmcia card=
=20
that i was using out of desperation....=20

also realised i hadnt installed the rest of ALSA, only the drivers - so i=
t was=20
missing alsa-utils, alsa-libs, alsa-oss - that could have been a problem=20
causing the unresolved symbols. but no... they're installed now and i sti=
ll=20
get this error:
