[Techtalk] LOST in Kernel space

Hi ALL,
ON my very first kernel compile from source I got lost after
make,,,; dep;clean;bzimage;modules;modules_install. Using Mandrake
8.0 which I gather and have counted on, as being the same as Red Hat.
I was in the /linux dir. All seemed ok. Then I went on to install,
and got lost. It appears I have also lost(misplaced) the new kernel.
The "How to" is for 2.0.xxx, I down-loaded i586 2.4.18
Any one with a crystal ball?
I had not yet done lilo.conf. or ln. It all stopped (my
config session) when I could not find "/arch/i386/boot/ to cd into.
At that point I intended to "cp bzImage /boot/vmlinux-xxx",
Also I did not name the new install so it seems there is a
new kernel img floating around with the old kernel name. How do I
find it. I have looked and found a files complied at on the 9th at
1:55am, the time is correct.
To re-cap, all I think I need to do is find the new kernel
(And re-name it.-How to do that?), and copy bzImage to /boot/?, then
do lilo.conf I think??? maybe.
If no one can figure out where to go from here.
How do I clean up this mess and start again. There is a netatalk
share holding lots of stuff I do not want to loose.

Guess I need to study some more.

	Thanks in advance.

P150-64mg-2.4.3 triing for 2.4.18 Mandrake
None of the GUI tools have worked in many, many tries.
