[Techtalk] dysfunctional Dell fan

 I have a CPi Latitude R400GT with A07 bios. The fan does not work. It could be a hardware issue, but 

I am generally figuring it is software. There are no fan or temperature 
monitoring fields in bios. I have heard of someone getting the i8kutils 
to work with a Latitude CS (a newer model than mine). When I try to 
modprobe i8k I get: <path>/18k.o.gz init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, 
including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.

  I think this says that i8k just isn't going to work with my model, but 
I wanted to ask the more knowledgeable first. I have already had one 
incident of heat issues, and expect it to get worse with the summer. Can 
people who owned any of the CPi models tell me how the fan was typically 
controlled, how often it ran, etc?
