iwconfig is part of the wireless tools package ... it'll give you output
like this:

Link Quality:13/10  Signal level:-67 dBm  Noise level:-256 dBm

there are a number of programs which interpret the signal level and give
you a little graph .. i think there's even a plugin for gkrellm :)  just a
matter of finding them.
