[Techtalk] increase level of debug info

Can someone remind me quickly how to increase the level of debug info that
gets printed in /var/log/messages? I am running RH ASE2.1

Or am I getting issues confused? I know that I can decide somewhere if I
want messages printed to the screen or just in the logs, but can I also
increase the level in the logs? I am working with a developer that insists
his code puts out more debug, if I knew how to find it...
