It wasnt me, but I'd at least mention a history of cvs and rcs, because I love reading histories of things :)

sccs springs to mind as an alternate system perhaps. I've only ever used cvs though, so I dont know much about it.

Oh, and dont Microsoft have Visual Codesafe (if i rember correctly)? I may be wrong, but I seem to rember seeing something...
