If you live where there's a LinuxChix cahpter or a LUG, you might consider
going there.  Talking to people in person can be very helpful.  If there's
an installfest happening, you can watch Linux being installed on
computers, or you can bring your own.  Of course, some people have had
negative experiences at LUGs, too, but sometimes you can learn more by
interacting with people in real life than through e-mail lists alone.
