	The Archos Jukebox (6GB & 20GB versions) works with Linux.  With
drivers in a current kernel, it appears as a hard drive on the system, and
you can use it as storage or copy MP3s to/from it.  My early experience
was that the drivers were somewhat flaky, causing the occasional system
hang, but I haven't had the same problems when I've given it lighter use
more recently (these days most of the content is on there already).  The
data transfer is somewhat slow, in the ballpark of 10MB per minute.  I'm 
not sure what you consider "compact", but it's pretty small for a HD 
model.
