You might also want to check out bru
(http://www.estinc.com/products.php),
I think the personal edition is still free.  Also you might want to read
the GNU tar manual at http://www.gnu.org/manual/tar/ which has more info
than the man page.  Also are you getting an error message when tar
chokes
or does it just stop?
