[techtalk] viewer for doc/excel

I use "strings" for MSWord (low tech, I know) and
http://tom.cs.cmu.edu/intro.html to view Excel files.
I'll eventually run StarOffice, but meanwhile the URL
is good for the occasional non-sensitive document.

With MSWord docs, I often just write back and ask people
to send an ASCII version if the content is essentially
ASCII and doesn't require formatting (why do they have
to assume everyone runs Windows?), but I actually like Excel.

Other than Excel, is there anything like it for UNIX? -S.
