there are a couple of options here:

1. if you're up to recompiling the kernel and have a recent one, you could
try enabling the framebuffer (fb) device and configure it for your video
card. This makes standard (8x16) fonts much more readable at higher
text-mode resolution.

2. try the SVGATextMode program. This is easier in some ways. It has a
configuration file like a cross between X's config file and svgalib's. It's
not terribly hard to use. It's available in most distributions.

both options require the technical specs of your monitor and possibly some
calculation of resolution depending on your monitor/video card.
