I beleive Jane was wrong while she told you that 6.1 is not a "stable"
release. She seems to mix kernel versioning system and RedHat distribution
versions. So let me tell you: when we speak of RedHat, every released version
is "stable" version. RedHat Linux X.1 is generally better than X.0, because it
is further improved/updated X version. So 6.1 is better, or if you won't be
happy with it, use 5.2, which is proved to be stable enough, although a bit
outdated and therefore needs some security updates which you can find somethere
at www.redhat.com.
If we speak of Linux kernel versions, 2.0.x and 2.2.x are "stable" versions
and targeted to be installed on a "production" systems, while 2.1 and 2.3 are
development versions and could even hang while booting on your machine. So if
you are not so curious to see latest Linux kernel features (and bugs), stick
with stable kernel. But _all_ RedHat distributions are stable, and use stable
kernels. For example, RedHat 6.1 use kernel 2.2.12, while 6.0 was bundled with
2.2.5.
Next stable version, 2.4.0, will be here for us in November-December, so I
think RedHat 6.2 will include 2.4.x kernel.
