[techtalk] Voodoo problems

First off, I think I've fixed the HTML/rich text problem.
Please let me know if anyone receives this message as anything
but plaintext.

As I noted in an earlier message, I am having problems
running X on my Voodoo3 3000 AGP. Someone kindly pointed
out that Caldera OpenLinux 2.2 was still running XFree86 3.3.1,
which is too early to have Voodoo supported, and suggested
I upgrade to 2.3.

After checking the Caldera and OpenLinux sites, I
was able to determine that Caldera 2.2 comes with X 3.3.1,
Caldera 2.3 comes with X 3.3.3, and X 3.3.4 is the first
version that has any Voodoo support. :-( So I went to
the XFree86 site and pulled down the tgz files for X 3.3.5,
the current version.

Unfortunately, that *still* doesn't fix the problem.
After installing 3.3.5 over top of the old X and running
the config program, I was indeed offered "Voodoo3 (generic)"
as a valid choice. The resulting file fails in exactly the
same way as the earlier 3.3.1 server did.

On the other hand, I switched the X symbolic link
and the config file over to VGA mode, and everything works
perfectly in 640x480. However, it's impossible to use KDE
meaningfully in 640x480, as there just isn't enough screen
real estate.

Has anyone out there successfully gotten X running properly
on a Voodoo card, particularly a Voodoo3 3000 AGP? The release
notes for X note that the Voodoo support is very new and perhaps
not yet stable. The solution may be to wait for the Voodoo
drivers to settle down, since I haven't a clue how to write
my own driver and patch the existing ones.

	Any hints?
