[prog] possibly wrong place to ask this

I'm trying to code a multiple precision math lib in order to figure
out how it's done (I'm a maths student, so sue me :P ). I was
wondering if anyone here knows where I could find some resources on
how to go about designing stuff like this? I'm happy getting my hands
dirty with ASM and stuff but will probably be working it out mostly in
C. I'm cool for algorithms. I'm just having difficulty figuring out
how to handle the big numbers.
