Thanks you all for reminding me of the
termios functions and the example code.
 I had totally forgotten about changing the 
terminal settings to non-canonical mode.
Before asking for help I had thought I had
looked through all my books, but once
you all clued me onto terminals, I found
some good stuff in Chapter 5 of
Beginning Linux Programming, WROX Press,
ISBN 1-874416-68-0      1996
