in your home directory either look for or create a file called .vimrc and
add this line:

set tabstop=n

where n is the number of spaces you want your tab to be set.

How does that work in vi?  (And I'm not necessarily assuming "it doesn't".
Vi ends up doing a lot of things that surprise me.)
