It really was a joke.  I'm writing a plugin for qpsmtpd in Perl at this very 
moment.  (I think I may have lucked out, as the qpsmtpd code seems well 
written and very clean.)  As far as I can tell, Perl has a significantly 
greater useage than Python (slightly more than twice as many projects on both 
Sourceforge and Freshmeat for example), and certainly seems to have more 
contributed libraries/modules available.  It is certainly a very useful 
language, and I have found writing plugins for qpsmtpd (in Perl) quite fun 
too!

However, I'm a mathematician at heart, rather than a programmer, and I 
consider Python's syntax to be more elegant than Perl's.  Elegance is very 
important to me.
