[prog] Java JTable or ...? for crossword puzzle display

Hey ... I've settled on a crossword puzzle as a project to learn Java
and am looking for some guidence on the the best crossword frame. A
series of JButtons or JLabels in a GridLayout? A JTable? Some other
display type widget(s)? Any advice on how to get both the crossword
"square number" and the "letter" on the same widget(s)?
