The Sr. Systems Engineer is responsible for helping to develop and
support a stable, available and scalable infrastructure that powers
AXS.com and a suite of products that include Advantage and Data Platform
(Hadoop). The scope of the position is from the system to the
application service level. In the spirit of Dev-ops this position
requires working closely with the internal development and big data
teams. We are looking for System Engineers familiar with large scale,
high traffic 24/7 production environments built in data centers and in
the cloud. The ideal candidate is someone with a deep understanding of
infrastructure, systems and services and how they’re built, deployed,
managed and interact at scale.
Essential Duties:
* Oversees provisioning and configuration of new systems in the cloud or
at the data center
* Work with various internal teams on issue resolution and systems
management
* First-line responsibility for isolating application-level
configuration, performance and database problems
* Performs analysis and tuning of system performance
* Works closely with internal development and big data teams on stage
and production management and deployment
* Maintain and grow a production environment in a way that makes the
system increasingly performant, stable and maintainable
* Participates in service capacity planning and demand forecasting,
software performance analysis and system tuning
* Responds to and resolves emergent service problems by debugging
systems and services
* Interfaces with development and operations teams to perform software
and systems analysis, upgrades and new deployments
* Management of system monitoring and performance monitoring frameworks,
alerting, and security policies
* Participate in on-call rotation
Required:
* A minimum education level of: Bachelor of Arts/Sciences Degree in
Computer Science or related field [nb: equivalent experience should be
fine]
* Years of related work experience: Minimum of 5 years related
experience in systems administration or devops
* Experience deploying and managing Redhat/Centos or Ubuntu servers
* Experience managing web-based applications in a large-scale Linux
environment
* Familiar with an administrative language such as Python, Ruby, or
Shell
* Experience with Amazon EC2 and other AWS services such as VPC, S3,
Cloudfront
* Private or public Cloud experience such as Openstack, Rackspace,
XenServer, VMWare
* Hands-on expertise in analyzing and troubleshooting applications built
with open source technologies
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills
* Experience managing data centers and bringing up physical servers
* Excellent troubleshooting skills and ability to handle on-call duties
and out-of-band requests
Preferred:
* Configuration management experience with Puppet
* PHP Framework management or development experience
* Postgres DBA or DB Dev experience
* Big Data or Hadoop (Cloudera) experience
* LXC, Docker, Containers experience
* Experience with any of the following technologies: Apache/Nginx,
Elastic Search, Node.js, MongoDB, Postgres/Mysql, Solr, Redis, Memcache,
Iptables, Git, FreeNAS, SAN, New Relic, Nagios, Graphite/Grafana, PXE
Boot, Kickstart, Haproxy, Arista, Juniper or Cisco switches, Cisco ASAs.
