This is at the University of Washington, Seattle, Washington, USA. I don't know what the work visa details are for the US and I doubt that telecommuting will be accepted. Relocation is negotiable, last I heard. This job is in the Structural Genomics of Pathogenic Protozoa Center at the UW. We're studying the protozoa that cause malaria, sleeping sickness and a couple of lesser known diseases. Malaria alone kills approx. 2 million people a year. However little research is being done by the big pharmacuetical companies due to these diseases being primarily in poorer countries, hence with little profit potential. So the NIH (National Institutes of Health) is funding research to study protein structures with the intent to be able to design drugs to cure or give immunity to these diseases. So on to the job description - this position hasn't yet made it through the Personnel Office's processing but will be up on the UW's web site in a few days. Check: http://uwjobs.admin.washington.edu/uwjobs/browse/ and it should be under the Computer and Information Technology category. The job title hasn't been set yet, so far it looks like they may make it Applications Specialist. The draft of University of Washington posting: General Duties/Description: Install, maintain and provide user support for crystallographic application programs used by researchers and staff of the SGPP structural genomics center (see http://depts.washington.edu/sgpp/). Work with researchers to design, develop, implement, document, and distribute new programs relevant to high-throughput structure determination and to the analysis of protein structures. Duties include: Develop and implement new application modules within existing interactive graphics frameworks for scientific visualization Implement new application code for protein crystallography, subject to background and skills in mathematics and numerical computation. Assist with development of web-based interface through which crystallographers will interact with Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) adopted by the SGPP project. Keep software licenses and installed versions up to date Coordinate in-house software development with that of other Structural Genomics centers. Requirements: Bachelor's or higher degree in computer science, information science, or scientific field related to crystallography AND four years of scientific programming experience in a unix/linux environment. Strong programming skills in Perl and either Fortran or C. Previous experience with Python and/or Tk scripting. Good communication and documentation skills. Equivalent education or experience may substitute for stated requirements. Desirable: Graduate degree in information or physical science; experience in computational biology, bioinformatics databases, or ideally in crystallographic computing; experience with Perl web-scripting; advanced skills in additional programming or scripting languages; experience or interest in linux system management. Salary: Commensurate with qualifications and experience There's also an ad running in Science magazine: Scientific Programmers - Experienced programmers with knowledge of, X-ray crystallography, bio informatics, or other relevant research fields are needed to support the SGPP project. Responsibilities will include working with researchers to design, develop, document, and distribute new programs relevant to high-throughput crystallography and the analysis and visualization of protein structure. This lab is a very good one to work in. I'm the systems manager for the group this postion will be with so feel free to ask me any questions you might have. You can send your resume to me if you like and I'll pass it on to my boss who's doing the hiring. That will get it under consideration faster than waiting for the posting to make it up on the UW jobs page. We're growing fast and looking for some committed, motivated volunteers to help us out. Right now, we are particularly keen to find a volunteer willing to commit at least 10 hours per week to assist us with our open source projects and to keep our Redhat 7.2 linux server running smoothly. The volunteer can work from home, but must be able to come to our office from time to time, in particular in the beginning. Position might evolve into paid work (part time, full time or occasional) depending on whether or not you will be able to work on paid projects. Volunteer must be very skilled at the linux command line, creating scripts, installing RPMs and open source applications from tarfiles, and coding in the PHP/Mysql/Apache environment. Perl and Python familiarity would help. Willingness to learn and ability to scour the net for solutions a must. Below is a list of some of the open source projects we have going - and would like to take up with your help. Please contact me at tobias@kabissa.org or 301-270-6705 if you are interested. In the December issue of Computer, there was an article about the CRA-W Distributed Mentor Project. Typing errors will probably be all mine :) "Women students in any subdiscipline of computer science and engineering are invited to participate in the 2003 CRA-W Distributed Mentor Project. Now in its 12th year, the DMP aims to increase the number of women entering graduate school in computer-related fields by providing them with research experience while they are still undergraduates. Each year, DMP organizers solicit applications from both students and faculty at colleges and universities throughout the US. The program matches women mentors and students with related research interests to conduct 10 weeks of research, generally during the summer months, at the mentor's home institution. Students receive $600 per week for research, plus a travel stipend. Mentors receive $2500 for mentoring one student, or $4000 for mentoring two or more. In 2001, the CRA-W launched a companion DMP program in Canada. Web-based applications and further information for both the US and the Canadian programs are available online at http://www.cra.org/craw/dmp/. The deadline for the summer 2003 CRA-W Distributed Mentor Project is 14 February. The project is just one activity of the Computing Resarch Association's Committee on the Status of Women in Computing Research. The IEEE Computer Society participates in the CRA as one of six affiliated member/sponsor societies. The CRA assists with leadership development, especially for under-represented groups, within the computing research commmunity." This person's working title is "Network Security Technician". Currently, the target customer for our security event management system is system administrators of small-medium businesses (banks, hospitals, service bureaus, public utilities, etc) with 250-500 client nodes (workstations/servers). Ideally, the individual seeking this job would have systems AND networking experience, be able to speak "the language" with customers who have the software and potential customers who are investigating the software. Experience with security and network infrastructure tools and devices such as intrusion detection systems (network and to a lesser degree host-based), firewalls, proxy servers, routers, switches, and operating systems is desired. Our location in Post Falls is just about on the state line - about half way between Spokane and Couer d'Alene, maybe a little closer to CdA. The company itself is "female-friendly" (the president/CEO is female also), but mostly men. I haven't seen a lot of female candidates come through, so I am hopeful that someone will spot this. We of course take and appreciate male applicants too ;o) We are a startup company, so if the hired individual fits the bill, learns quickly, is flexible, and works well within our environment, there is always opportunity to expand your "horizons" so to speak. Please see our job listing on the website if you are interested. :o) long monster link: http://jobsearch.monster.com/getjob.asp?JobID=17142144&AVSDM=2003%2D04%2D22+15%3A54%3A00%2E000&CCD=my%2Emonster%2Ecom&JSD=jobsearch%2Emonster%2Ecom&HD=company%2Emonster%2Ecom&AD=http%3A%2F%2Fjobsearch%2Emonster%2Ecom%2Fjobsearch%2Easp%3Fq%3D%26lid%3D887%26fn%3D543%26fn%3D6%26sort%3Drv%26vw%3Db%26cy%3DUS%26brd%3D1%252C1862%252C1863&Logo=1&col=dltci&cy=US&brd=1%2C1862%2C1863&lid=887&fn=543%2C+6&q= short link: http://www.trigeo.com/careers.shtml#nst Both pages should indicate the correct path for your resume - you can just email them to hr at trigeo dot com. The aim of the project is to develop an understanding of the impact of information and communications technology amongst backpackers or travellers, using qualitative methods (see fuller outline below). Applicants should send a cv, together with a 500 word synopsis which identifies their interest in the project and the knowledge which they can bring to bear in researching it to Carole Hansen, University of Brighton, Faculty of MIS, Lewes Rd, Brighton, BN2 4GJ by WEDNESDAY 10th SEPTEMBER. Further details about the project can be obtained from Lyn Pemberton (lp22@bton.ac.uk). -------------------------------------------------------------------------= ---- Extended version: Research Aims "I am a traveller, you are a tourist, he is a tripper". [Waterhouse, 1989, quoted in Urry, 1990] The aim of the project is to develop an understanding of the impact of information and communications technology amongst backpackers or travellers, i.e. young Westerners spending a prolonged period travelling on a low budget in less developed countries. The study focuses on the impact of computer-mediated communication and information tools, such as email, mobile phone and the WWW, on the experience of being a traveller. Specific questions to address in the project might include: * How do backpackers share knowledge before/during/after their trip? * How do backpackers make use of new ICT's, e.g. the Web and email via Internet caf=E9's, SMS and so on? * How do non-digital media involving books (particularly Lonely Planet and similar), hostel notice boards and word of mouth fit into the communications and information mix? * How have communication and information sharing between travellers changed in last 20 years? How, if at all, do travellers form communities of practice? * How has communication between travellers and people in "home" countries changed in last 20 years? And between travellers and "hosts"? * How do notions of identity and space change when travellers can be in constant touch with home and other safety zones? Notions of risk, adventure, individualism, status will be explored here. Methodology This is a survey and literature based study, i.e. it need not be an observational or action research project based in the target countries. A likely approach would be to include a comparative historical element, based on published studies/in-depth interviews with people who travelled 20/5 years ago and a recent group, plus diaries/journals where possible.
