"This system" wasn't intended to refer to "the DNS", it meant "the
system of domain names we current have", which is a broader thing than
the technical system that allows it to take place. (This course is only
interested in the technical system, and anything else for that matter,
in so far as you need to know about it to have a domain name.)

The word "original" was probably a poor choice.
