I wonder if this isn't an idea that would be better run as a separate
project, say, as a course on web frameworks, or a group project to set
up some kind of website for some other purpose.

The LinuxChix website, judging from the failed attempt to re-do it, and
also the maintainence issues it has had over the past few years
(profiles of members who have died several years ago still being live
for a long time etc) might be best if it stays fairly low maintainence,
meaning limiting its scope to information about the group and our
activities and trying to stay away from easily outdated content, such as
static profiles of our members[1].

I suppose the question will be better resolved once the new website is
in place and we get a reasonable idea of how many volunteers there are
for ongoing content maintainence. The current website's scope is outside
our current volunteer capacity by a long way, but there will be new
volunteers when it is updated, so I can't predict the energy level.

[1] Using a good CMS will help here though, because they can do things
like automatically hide listings for events that have passed, that kind
of thing.
